
The history of Wado is really the history of Hirinori Otsuka, so I will use that as a base to the history and origins of Wado Ryu.
Otsuka Sensei was born on June 1st, 1892 in Shimodate, Ibaragi Prefecture. Japan.
On April 1st. 1897 he started classes in Shinto Yoshin Ryu, Jujutsu under Nakayama Sensei, the Master of the style.
On June 1st of 1920, at the age of 29, he was awarded the highest degree of the school, which made it possible for him to become the fourth Grand Master of the style.
In July of 1922 Otsuka Sensei began the study of Okinawan TODE, karate.
In May of 1934 he founded Wado Ryu Karate, by uniting techniques of Okinawan karate and traditional Japanese Jujutsu.
Sensei died at the age of 90 on Januarry 29th, 1982.
